Could my daughter be autistic?

Signs of Autism in Girls and When to Seek Help

Autism in girls often looks different than in boys. Many girls aren’t diagnosed because they appear social or well-behaved—but that doesn’t mean they’re not struggling. If you’re wondering about your daughter, here are some things to know—and how to decide if an autism assessment might help.

Why Girls Get Missed

Girls often hide their struggles by copying others or staying quiet. Teachers might say they’re well-behaved or just shy. But pretending to be okay can be exhausting and lead to anxiety or sadness.

What can autism look like in girls?

Autism in girls may not follow the patterns we typically associate with autism. Here are some common—but often overlooked—signs to be aware of. While none of these confirm autism on their own, noticing several of them—especially across different settings—may suggest the possibility of autism and warrant further exploration. This is not an exhaustive list, and every child is unique in how traits may appear or change over time.

• Gets along okay at school but struggles with making or keeping friends

• Copies how others act or speak to fit in

• Very sensitive to noise, clothes, lights, or being touched

• Melts down at home after holding in feelings all day

• Has strong interests and talks a lot about them (like animals, books, or celebrities)

• Uses formal or rehearsed speech when talking

• Worries a lot or tries to be perfect

• Likes being alone, with animals, or younger kids more than same-age peers

• Repeats small movements (like tapping fingers or bouncing feet)

Should We Get an Assessment?

An assessment might help if:

• You see signs of overwhelm, social challenges, or big emotions

• Your daughter says she feels different, lonely, or left out

• She’s been diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, or other concerns but things still feel off

• You often explain her behaviour to others or feel she’s misunderstood

An autism assessment can help you understand your daughter better, give her words for what she’s feeling, and help you know how to support her.
