Boost Your Spirit

Here are some quick tools that will help you enhance your mood when you are feeling stressed or down.

  1. Look for the positives. Find things to appreciate throughout your day.
  2. Laugh. Find ways to make yourself laugh, whether it is watching a sitcom on TV or cuing up YouTube. Laughter creates a chemical reaction that instantly elevates mood, reduces pain and stress, and boosts immunity.
  3. Have an uplifting snack or meal. Omega-3 fats may make people less prone to depression, so add some salmon or nuts to your day.
  4. Calming scents like lavender or oranges help people feel less anxious, more positive and more relaxed.
  5. Do something fun. Nothing beats trying new experiences, being active, or spending quality time with friends and family.
  6. Take in some sun. For an extra boost: exercise with morning light exposure.
  7. Volunteer. Those who volunteer tend to be happier than those who don’t. Researchers believe that happiness is enhanced because volunteering increases empathy and helps you appreciate the good things in your own life.
  8. Take a hike. Even mild exercise can lift your mood, so if you’re not up for high intensity aerobics, take a walk around the park or dig in your garden.
  9. Clear the clutter. Messy areas can make you anxious, so put aside some time to organize your living space.
  10. Carve out a time out. Everyone needs a time out once in awhile. Take a few moments at work or sip some hot tea at the end of the day and relax, tuning your mind into positive thoughts.
  11. Look through photos. Even better: share them with a friend.
  12. Smile. If you act happy, you tend to experience positive consequences. Your happiness will elevate and you can make more friends.
