Parent Skillbuilding

Parent skillbuilding workshops provide specific tools for parents to effectively communicate with their children; to effectively manage maladaptive behaviours; and to nurture the physical, emotional, and mental health of their children. Each workshop covers a different topic, but all build from the foundation workshop Parenting: The Secret, which highlights ways for parents to strengthen their attachment relationships with their children.

This workshop is the foundation for all others offered by Koru Psychology and is recommended as the first workshop parents take from the Parenting 101 Series.

There are thousands of books on parenting and yet many parents feel unsuccessful. Parents try everything and are frequently disappointed in the results. In this workshop, the parenting “secret” is discussed and specific tools are provided to help parents create a positive relationship with their children. No parenting strategy, no matter how good, will work unless this relationship is solidified.

Struggling with your child’s behaviours? This three-part workshop is for all parents, and especially those with children who seem to be “out of control.” This workshop presents a compassionate, rational, research-based approach to dealing with problems that most parents have either felt were their own fault or unsolvable. Challenging behaviour has traditionally been thought of as willful and goal oriented which has led to approaches that focus on motivating better behaviour using reward and punishment programs. If you’ve tried these strategies and they haven’t worked, this workshop is for you! This workshop will help parents shift their thinking and approach to foster positive relationships with their children and encourage growth in areas of self-regulation, communication and problem solving.

Having a baby is a wonderful experience, but even the best relationships are strained as a new baby joins the family. Lack of sleep, lack of “downtime,” ever increasing responsibility and financial concerns often lead to conflict, disappointment, and hurt feelings. Based on the work of John Gottman, this workshop helps couples positively manage the strain that comes along with their newest addition to the family.

This is a Couples only workshop.

One-on-one consultation services are also available for parents and families. These services include short-term support to assist parents to enhance their parenting skills and problem-solve and manage their child’s challenging behaviours.
